Currently, the waiting time for approval of an immigrant visa can be as long as five years or more for an unmarried child of United States citizens. Siblings of a U.S. citizen might have to wait for 10 years or more for an immigrant visa, while applicants from countries with high immigration records like China and Mexico may face a waiting period of 20 years or more. Shortening the waiting period for immigrant visas would make our immigration system more efficient and less burdensome for applicants.
“It’s extremely difficult to get legal entry into this country,” said Kevin Fandl, a law professor and a former employee of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office. “It depends on what type of visa you’re applying for, but if you’re coming as a low-skilled worker, it’s nearly impossible.”

If the United States wishes to remain the melting pot of the world and extend open arms to those who aspire to achieve the American dream, as my father did many years ago, it must make green cards and visas more readily available.
We are aware of the numerous benefits of legal immigration in the United States. However, we also have a responsibility to protect ourselves from the consequences of illegal immigration.
